What are
Cobra Solid Lubricants? Cobra Solid Lubricants
are a proprietary mixture of graphite and other materials formulated
specifically for use with bearings. When inserted into the bearing, the mixture
has the consistency of a paste. Next, a computer engineered pressure and heat
treatment is performed followed by a precise run-in and finishing procedure.
When the process is complete, the lubricant is dry and bonded only to the
bearings metal cage.
Can it be
used on all bearings? Most ball or roller
bearings (except needle bearings and some thrust bearings) as large as 25”
outside diameter or as small as 1/8” inside diameter can be sealed and
lubricated with Cobra Solid Lubricants. However, the bearing and its cage should
be metal. Note: There are some applications in which the bearing is not under
heavy load or high RPM (for example, a typical conveyor bearing) where a full
complement bearing can be processed with Cobra Solid Lubricants. In this case,
please call to discuss the application.
How
much longer will my bearings last? Bearing
life is determined by many factors including load, temperature, rpm, quality of
the bearing, shaft fit, and lubricant. The degree to which Cobra Solid
Lubricants will extend bearing life will vary from one application to another.
We have seen applications in which our lubricant extended the period between
bearing maintenance from a daily routine to once every four months – saving
thousands of dollars!
How much does
it cost? Cobra Solid Lubricants are priced
according to the type and size of the bearing used as well as certain conditions
of your application. To have us quote on your bearings, fill out the
“Quotation Form” and return it to us. We will respond with a quote and
answer any other questions you may have.
Can
I buy the lubricant and do it myself? No.
Because of the special equipment and the proprietary process used to insert and
cure the graphite, the bearings can be lubricated only at Unique Technologies
Associates facilities. Contact us for purchase information and for an authorized
distributor near you.
Do
I send you the bearings or can I get them from you?
Whichever is more convenient for you. We are a distributor for many bearing
manufacturers and we can supply the same or an equivalent bearing. Contact
us for purchase information and for an authorized distributor near you.
Will it prevent
corrosion? Cobra Solid Lubricants are not
corrosion inhibitors. However, it is our experience that even in cases were rust
is the primary problem, measurable bearing life increase was realized with Cobra
Solid Lubricants. Normal care should always be taken to protect bearings in
corrosive environments.
How
often will I have to relubricate the bearings?
Never!
My
application requires bearings to operate at over 500F. Can I use Cobra Solid
Lubricants? Cobra Solid Lubricants can be used
in applications as high as 660F. Because they are solid lubricants, the problems
normally associated with conventional lubricants (leaking out and oxidizing) are
eliminated. However, above 250F, heat stabilized steel bearings must be used due
to the reduced load capacity that occurs when steel is heated to high
temperatures.
How
does it perform at very low temperatures?
Cobra Solid Lubricants will continue to lubricate even at temperature as low as
-250F. And, because they are solids, the starting torque is similar to a free
spinning bearing at room temperature. You can achieve substantial energy
efficiency over conventional lubricants and extend motor life (and keep more
money in your pocket).
Can
I use Cobra Solid Lubricants in a vacuum application?
Yes! The natural characteristic of graphite is to exhibit extremely low out
gassing even in high vacuum and high temperatures. In fact, we have found that,
in a vacuum, the lubricant continues to be effective even at temperatures beyond
our rated upper limit!
Will
the lubricant work under water? Yes! Cobra
Solid Lubricants are insoluble in most common organic solvents, acids, and
alkalis. The lubricant will not wash out under water, in a steam wash down, or
in most chemical baths.
I
have a serious problem with dust and other harsh contaminants even though my
bearing are sealed. Will Cobra Solid Lubricants do a better job?
This is an excellent application for these lubricants. The process by which the
bearings are lubricated creates a natural seal between the rings. Because the
Cobra Solid Lubricants completely fill the gap between the inner and outer
rings, there is no opportunity for foreign matter to enter the ball path.
Are
there applications where it should not be used?
Because they are solids, Cobra Solid Lubricants should not be used in
applications that involve strong shock loads such as automotive wheel bearings
or vibrating mixers.
